While conveying strong social criticism, Watanabe's work is rooted in facing wounds and repression based on personal experiences from his time at Tokyo University of the Arts. He expresses himself mainly through painting, though also delves into installation, performance and more. Withdrawal, new religion, the homeless and gender are just some of the issues touched on. After graduation, Watanabe experienced a reclusive life on the streets before returning in 2013. Since then he has put forth a stream of energetic expressision.
