Takuya Yamashita produces sculpture, installation and works on paper that ironically investigate the relationship between artist and components of a place where the artist is involved. He surprises viewers with his enormous yet charming sculptures and installations mostly using architectural materials of the place and abandoned mascots from past Olympics or broken-up football teams. Simultaneously, the artist accuses social system that ceaselessly produces and neglects goods and characters not only in the field of pop culture but also political and economical activities. Such keen allegation gives his works an atmosphere of vivid brightness and ominous portent. His recent exhibition includes: "museum〆an" Nakamura Keith Haring Collection(2014/Yokohama), "TALION's Child" TALION GALLERY(2014/Tokyo), "Yokohama Triennial 2014 BankART life 4" BankART studio NYK(2014/Yokohama)," Aichi Triennial 2013" Chojamachi, Okazaki(2013/Aichi).
My work starts from observing the place where I exhibit the work. The process of making the works is like I bring "them" who seemingly have nothing to do with the occasion to the place. It is like a wizard draws a magic square on the ground, and creatures appear from the square. What I'm calling "them" are those who lose their opportunities like a mascot for a broke-up soccer team and mascots for the past Olympics. For me, it is very important to bring "them" back to "our world" which is opposite from "their world". My artistic practice which is often committed forcibly is the act of resistance against the oblivion and being swept away from the contemporary art scene.
