In his artistic practice, Kawakubo moves between photography, sound, video, performances and architectural interventions with the installation of texts, and found or personal objects to create intriguing, playful and thought-provoking works, resulting in comprehensive installation spaces. Often Kawakubo raises political questions of difference through historical research on a wide range of topics, such as philosophy, economy, identity, history, mythology and literature.
