Masako Yasuki paints ‘landscapes’, but not landscapes in the sense used in Modern painting. Through exposure to the landscapes she represents, her paintings give ‘memory’, ‘history’ and the idea of ‘landscape’ different perspectives. Regarding painting materials, Yasuki selects from, among others, the tempera of medieval European paintings, natural pigments of old oriental paintings, gold leaf and silver leaf. By becoming accustomed with these inconvenient and old-fashioned materials, she intends to open a path of communication with the ancient arts. Yasuki has held many solo exhibitions at galerie 16 (Kyoto), BASE GALLERY (Tokyo), and Gallery TE (Tokyo) among other exhibitions, including in America, Britain, South Korea and Russia. She was guest researcher at Smith College (USA, 2015) arranged through the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan, and has other experience as a guest artist in the US and UK.
