たいていのビジネスでは、市場を調査し、すでにある需要に合わせて商品を提供しています。しかしギャラリーの場合、それとは反対に、ギャラリストが将来性を見込んだアーティストの作品を世に送り出し、その価値を認めてもらおうと努力しています。美的価値が市場価値に優先するとか、供給者側の自意識が高いとかという話ではなく、そもそもギャラリーとはそういうものだからです。

もし市場調査の結果、「消費者が求める作品」がわかったとしても、アーティストはそのような作品を積極的に作ろうとはしないでしょう。「消費者が求める作品」を作ったところで、だれも驚いてはくれず、高く評価されるはずがないからです。鑑賞者の側も、予想外の作品を目にしたときの思いがけない楽しさを歓迎するので、アーティストがあえて不確かなものを作ろうとすることは現実的でもあります。

橘画廊はそうした「予測できないものとの出合い」を演出しようと、2011年に発足しました。10年後に何を作っているか見通せる作家ではなく、10年後にどのような作品を生み出すのか予想できない作家を扱おうと心がけています。もちろん、いつも鑑賞者に驚きを与えることは難しく、アーティストが新作を生み出すたびに一喜一憂しているわけですが、若いギャラリーの特権で失敗を恐れない挑戦を続けています。

In most businesses, the market is surveyed, and commodities are offered which match existing market demand. However, in the case of a gallery, on the contrary, a gallerist introduces to the world art works from artists who have anticipated future prospects, and endeavors to assess the value of those works. It isn't a question of aesthetic value having preference over market value, or that the supplier side has a high sense of self-consciousness; this is simply how galleries inherently are.

Even if "art works which consumers demand" were understood as a result of market research, artists would not proactively make such works. If such "art works which consumers demand" were created, they would astonish no one and therefore it's unlikely they would be highly regarded. Viewers welcome a contrary pleasure when encountering unexpected art works, so it is also pragmatic for artists to make works which dare to be indefinite.

The Tachibana Gallery was launched in 2011 with the intention to produce "rendezvous with things which cannot be predicted." Rather than artists whose works can be predicted ten years from now, we are endeavoring to support artists who cannot guess what they will produce in ten years. Of course it is always difficult to bestow astonishment on the viewer, and there are swings between hope and fear whenever an artist creates new works. However, with the freedom unique to a young gallery, we will continue to dare without fear of failure.
