Hibino won the 3rd Japan Graphic Arts Grand Prix in 1982 while studying at Tokyo University of the Arts for his two-dimensional artwork using cardboard and received the 30th ADC Awards Grand Prix the following year. His energetic and pop art style expressed in his use of the texture of cardboard created his presence as a star and made a great impact on young artists as he broke the boundaries between art and design. He exhibited his works at numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad, and at the Sydney Biennale in 1986 and the Venice Biennale in 1995. From the latter half of the 1990s, his activities to express himself based on communication with other people have increased in importance, and in recent years he holds many workshops with local people that take advantage of the characteristics of the local area and these activities have become increasingly popular, such as "The Day After Tomorrow Project" where he plants and grows morning glory flowers with local people.
