Takeshi Kimura, a sculptor based in Akita, has received high praise, including the Miyagi Prefecture Art Award for New Artists (2014), and has in recent years energetically presented his work centered in Tohoku as an up-and-coming artist, including his solo exhibitions at the Rias Ark Museum of Art in Kesennuma, as well as his alma mater, Tama Art University. By equally arranging and configuring the digitized, non-material information that surrounds us (sound, light, video, movement, etc.) and the material presence that is sculpture, Kimura reconsiders sculpture as a monument from a skeptical point of view, exploring its new possibilities. Through sculptures reminiscent of animals or the human body, and poetic installations similar to theater settings which make use of various media, he attempts to create organic phenomena and relationships between the body of the viewer and the things placed there. He also includes introspective commentary on the history of the exhibition venue and cultural context, creating a multilayered experience that evokes our subsconscious feelings. I look forward to the future development of his artwork.
