Hidden Urban Nature: images bridging context and creation

This exhibition introduces the outcomes of the two joint workshops held between 2017 and 2018 with Made in Sàrl, Swiss architect-duo consisting of two ETH Zürich professors.
The aim of “Inside and Outside of Kyoto” workshop held in 2017 was to explore the visible and invisible boundaries that exist in Kyoto. Students of architecture major divided into four groups and each created a film that incorporates sounds, texts, and images after conducting video research and reinterpretating Kyoto depicted in existing video contents.
The theme of the workshop held in 2018 was “Subtraction”. Designers’ creative process is often characterized by the act of addition. Addition means to apply something, as examplified in value creation and problem solving.
However, through the process of field research, photographing of landscape, and image synthesis, students have disclosed the hidden qualities of Kyoto that can only be revealed by the act of subtraction.
The images and videos exhibited here should be regarded as concepts that drive us towards new creation rather than works resulted as a conclusion of a project. Meaning, the concept is to express representations through film, instead of the familiar formats such as drawings, models, and texts.
