堀川さん、田中さんの両者に共通するのは、それぞれユニークな絵画の制作の方法論を確立していながら、ワークショップの参加者や他ジャンルのアーティストと関わりながら作品を発展させているところです。私がかつて企画した水戸芸術館で堀川さんの小さな展示は、彼女がその独特の方法論を確立する過程を紹介するものでした。ひとつの方法論にたどり着くまで、一人でこつこつと実験的な制作を続ける探究心を空間に再現するような展示になりました。その後、ニューヨークでのレジデンスを経て、人種や国籍、年齢の異なる人々を巻き込みながら彼女の方法論、そして作品はますます広がりを持つようになりました。 田中さんもミュージシャンと一緒にライブペインティングをおこなったり、ファッションデザイナーとコラボレーションした洋服を発表しています。ポップカルチャーのクリエイターと協働することで、抽象絵画が閉じた絵画のジャンルではなく、音楽や身体とも親和性が高いという、当然なのに見過ごされがちな事実をアップデートしながら実践している作家です。 トレンドに消費されることなく、独自の方法論を確立している作家は、活動の息が長く、作品はゆっくりと成熟していきます。現代アートの醍醐味のひとつは、作家の成長と作品の成熟の過程を同時期に体験できるところです。この二人の作家はこの悦びを私に感じさせてくれます。

The common thread in both Horikawa and Tanaka is to establish their unique methodologies, while developing their artworks in collaboration with the others including workshop participants and the artists of different genres. The small exhibition of Horikawa's works, which I curated for Art Tower Mito, introduced the process of forming her distinctive painting method. It resulted a small retrospective exhibition that represented her intensive exploration of experimental practices on her own. After the exhibition, Horikawa completed a residency in New York. Through the residency in New York, she evolved her artistic practice, involving diverse people with different race, nationalities, and age groups. Tanaka has presented his works with different collaborators including musicians for the live painting and the fashion designer to present clothing using his paintings as textile pattern. . Through these collaborations with creators in pop culture, he articulates his abstract paintings are not constrained by the existing canon of fine art, rather they have affinities with music and performance. The artists that establish their solid methodologies are not consumed by trends in the art world, instead, their works get matured steadily for long time. The one of exciting things in contemporary art is that we can witness the process of artistic development and the evolving of their works simultaneously And I know new works by Horikawa and Tanaka always provide me the sense of joy.
