Rather than situating nature as an opposing concept to modern human society, Wataru Yamamoto documents the phenomena appearing in the relationship between humans and nature. Using photographic methods, he attempts to capture the space that is neither nature nor human.

写真を主な表現手段として用いる山本が被写体とするのは、主に森や草木といった「自然」です。しかしながらここでいう自然とは近代的な人間や人工物の対概念としての自然ではなく、人間と自然との関わりの中に見出される現象のことをさします。山本の写真は、スケッチや、森の枝葉に紐をくくりつける行為などによって作家と自然の関わりを記録し、それらを通して人間の精神的なイメージとしてある「自然」について映し出しています。私たち人間がそれぞれの視点で捉える自然は、時に未知なるものであり、畏怖の象徴であり、崇高で神聖なものでもあります。私たちにとっての「自然」とは何か。山本の作品は私たちに改めて考えさせる機会を与えてくれます。
