Encounters with new things and sights, even if they are unusual at first, become commonplace over time. That is how we accept the relationships between ourselves and the things around us, and meanwhile, an invisible connection is made, built little by little. In the trivial things found in everyday life, I look for their potential to become something new. By changing where they are or how I look at them, I place the relationship between myself and those things in the realm of the unusual. And if they could become something unforgettable, I give them shape so as not to be lost, and try to show that to someone.

When you notice a single hair fall onto your skin, or a small rock in your shoe, you once again realize even with a little surprise how exquisite one’s senses are. Sugiura’s work awakens a sense for trivial things, things that would probably gather dust if left alone. Vague memories, the extremely clear events of a dream, the daydreams endlessly spreading in your head, and the real world between your eyes—pieces of these become entwined in her work, causing a certain roughness or strangeness. They are, however, presented not as a foreign substance or discomfort to be removed, but instead humorously and positively, as a new perspective of what we consider commonplace or ordinary. It reminds us the importance of stopping for a moment when we, or our society, start to become absorbed in particular principles, values, or points of view.
