Lately, I’ve been thinking that the history of art history has been about how to get close to others (people, objects, things). I think there are many ways to approach your target, but I also feel that’s why you cannot approach it at all, and I think thinking about that mystery may be what art is.

Keiichiro Terae is a “foolish” person. His works often make one think that he is doing something silly: going overseas and asking in broken sentences to be allowed to clean people’s toilets, becoming a craftsperson called “stone creator”, living in China and developing close relationships with homeless youth, and so on. In China there is an ancient tale of a foolish person moving a mountain. I understand it to mean that only foolish people can move mountains. Artists might mean being able to be such foolish people. Terae’s intension and its range is surprisingly far and deep.
