Yoshiaki expression. In his 2017 solo exhibition “Companion Birds” he showed a film piece in which he kept throwing himself into a huge slice of corn rolling towards him. The appearance was humorous, yet also lonely, somehow conveying a sense of sorrow. The huge corn serves as a metaphor for the powerful presences that affect our society. For example, what we think of as righteous and beautiful is mostly formed by the system of a society – through history, culture, education and media. These things are hardwired into our subconscious minds and impossible to resist. But what exists outside of this framework? The way Kuribara fights for “freedom” shakes our very values at this art fair.
