Ren Fukuzumi

Art Critic

Selected Artists

The most difficult question for the art critic is “what are the criteria of the critique?”, because this question is nothing more than a tautology. An art critique is by nature the proposal of the criteria, and the critique itself can be said to be the standard. It is impossible to separate the critique from the criteria, let alone define the concept of criteria in critiques.

In an era when a particular style or movement was dominant, perhaps a clear set of standards could have been stated. However, in today’s world, when the outline of ‘art’ is ambiguous yet each tendency is individually established, expecting a particular standard to be universally applicable is nonsense. Viewed from the opposite side, however, it can be seen as a happy era for an artist in a sense, as they can develop expression freely, completely unbound by prescribed criteria.

While the three artists I recommended are all female, there is no particular meaning to that. Their characteristics are unique to each of them, and I urge you to read their individual recommendations.
