Masakazu Fukuta takes countless moments cut and fixed by the camera, and processes them via computer until they are nearly transparent. By causing them to overlap and fuse together, he creates a yet unknown layer that expresses an “extremely thin depth”. To borrow his own words, perhaps we could call it the surface of the “lake of time”. By shooting a walking model from a moving standpoint many times, and then condensing those shots into a single print, his work “surface” evokes a hint of the existence beyond the outward appearance which changes over time. —Shin Yoshimura (Review for “surface” in the exhibition “Far through layers”, 2016)

Fukuta’s approach to the subject of layers in space and perception of time is seen in many of his works through the ways of accumulating layers of time and obscuring time itself. He thereby reconstructs a sense of distance between himself and his work, and through that abstractness, reveals a presence that we hadn’t been conscious of until now. There, the sculptural approach in which he began his practice can be seen even in two-dimensional pieces, and in the atmosphere surrounding a piece, one can vaguely feel the social and existential uncertainty of today. It reminds us to think about our own existence in the world.
