南靖子（1987年生まれ、東京在住）は東北芸工大学で日本画を学んだ。金箔や銀箔を用いて作品を制作する作家が多い中、あえて無機質で冷たい印象のあるアルミ箔を支持体に用いる。さらに伝統的な日本画において箔は画面の余白の部分に用いられるのに対して、地や陰影の部分を描くことにより箔の部分を図に反転させて作品を成立させている。モチーフは「花」など伝統的なものであるがそのクールで力強い存在感で見るものを圧倒する。日本の伝統文化や古典を通して基礎を学び、独自の表現方法で新しい日本画を追求している彼女は今後の成長が最も気になるアーティストの一人だ。

Yasuko Minami was born in 1987 and lives in Tokyo. At the Tohoku University of Art and Design she studied Japanese-style painting. In Japanese-style painting many artists use gold or silver flakes in their works. Meanwhile, Minami chooses to affix aluminum flakes—a material that looks cold and inorganic—to the support. Furthermore, in traditional Japanese-style painting the flakes are used in the empty spaces in the picture. In Minami’s case however, by painting a background and shadows, she turns the area with the flakes into the figure. This is the setup of her works. She uses motifs that are traditional, such as flowers. Yet, the motifs are cool and have a powerful presence. As a result, they overwhelm the viewers. Minami learned the fundamentals by studying Japan’s traditional cultures and classics. She is pursuing new Japanese-style paintings by a unique method. Minami is an artist that we want to keep watching so we can see how she develops.
