「Ferns always grow at the bottom edge of the room in which I paint. There was a time when I would often pick and look at them. Their form is that of a linkage that shrinks. Within its leaves are beautifully spaced smaller leave-like shapes. I felt that these spaces are like a model. A thing within a leaf that is not a leaf, a much older being than leaves, or perhaps something that a leaf could have been. This is also the case for birds, insects, humans, and written characters.」

To the present day Koki Okagawa has continued to depict the same motif. He uses different styles, such as strong lines that seem to be expressing Okagawa’s determination and soft, enveloping painted colors that make the work seem like a delicate watercolor. As if he is possessed, he depicts the same motif over and over again, exhaustively. His approach brings to mind the actors of Japanese traditional performing arts. Like them, by performing the same movement again and again he is pursuing his own expression. Okagawa, in the “leaves” that he sees while he is in his studio, may be seeing in them truth about nature and a miniature cosmos. Yet, Okagawa’s works radiate an energy that is bright and warm. There is even humor to the energy. It is as though his sincere and charming personality shows up in his pictures.
