「主に人形アニメーションを使った映像や、立体作品、短編映画を制作する。アジアの民間伝承や民族文化のリサーチを基に、あらゆる民族や時代にかかわらず人々が共有するイメージを取り入れた、ナラティブな映像表現を試みる。直近では、人形に呼吸、瞬き、涙を流す動作をさせることにより、人形に内臓を感じるアニメーション表現の実験をしている。」
「I create three-dimensional pieces, film pieces primarily using doll animation, and short films. Based on research about folk tales and culture in Asia, I attempt narrative film expression incorporating images that people share, regardless of ethnicity or era. With my recent work, I have been experimenting with animation expression that allows us to sense the presence of organs in dolls by making them breathe, blink and shed tears.」

副島しのぶは、人形アニメーションを使った映像作品を制作してきた。東京藝術大学卒業制作で発表した『ケアンの首達』（2018）で注目され、その後世界各国の美術や映像フェスティバルで入選、受賞。その造形力と映像表現、物語性、作品としての完成度には目を見張るものがある。民間伝承や民族文化のリサーチを通して作品の着想を得るという副島。彼女がつくり出す場所や建物、衣装、ナラティブからは、多様な民族に共通する歴史や文化の要素が漂う。丹念なリサーチを重ねながら、立体的造形とアニメーションの魅力をアート作品として表現する副島のユニークな視点に着目し、今後のさらなる進化に期待して本展の出品作家として推薦する。
Shinobu Soejima has been creating video works using doll animation. She received attention for her graduation work she made as a student at the Tokyo University of the Arts, "The Spirits of Carin" (2018). Subsequently, she has been selected to show her work in many art festivals and video festivals held in other countries, and she has won a number of awards. Soejima’s modeling skills, her video expressions, the richness of her stories, and her pieces’ completeness as works are extraordinary. Soejima gains inspirations for her creations by researching folklores and ethnic cultures. The places, buildings, costumes, and narratives that she creates contains the elements of history and culture that are common to diverse ethnic groups. Soejima performs painstaking research and expresses as artworks the enchantments of 3D modeling and animations. Her perspective is unique. I hope that she will further develop as an artist, and I am pleased to recommend her for this exhibition.
