今回推薦した小林勇輝、副島しのぶ、和島ひかりの3人は、それぞれ全く異なる作風でありながら、身体性について個々に追求している点が興味深い。小林は人種や国や性別によるステレオタイプからの逃避を求めて、自身の身体をあらわにする。生々しさとユーモアを備えた表現にはイギリス仕込みの「毒」が感じられるが、見慣れると爽快感が生まれてくるから不思議だ。 副島は架空の世界の中に「リアリティ」を見事に浮かび上がらせる。物語の下地となるリサーチの丹念さ、造形物を肉づけする際の創意工夫がなせる技だろう。 和島は自分自身に向き合い、肉体と精神へのユニークな分析を行う。繊細でありながら冷静に世界を見つめる視線が、大胆な表現力へとつながっている。 「あたりまえ」を疑うことがアートだとしたら、彼らはヴァーチャルな空想世界ではなく、厄介な「身体」に向き合い、忘れていることや見えていないものに気づかせてくれる。ときにしつこく、ときにさりげなく。

The three artists I selected, Yuuki Kobayashi, Shinobu Soejima, and Hikari Wajima, all possess completely different creative methods, yet share the point of each pursuing the idea of physicality. Kobayashi attempts to escape from stereotypes surrounding race, nationality, gender, and other forms of prejudice by using his own physical body as an embodiment. Through his expressions carrying a certain rawness and humor, one feels a tinge of British-like "venom" - yet strangely, that feeling eventually turns into exhiliration. Soejima wonderously draws out reality within a fictional world. From conducting meticulous research as foundations for storytelling to fleshing out the models, she holds a clear ingenuity. Wajima makes unique analyses for body and spirit by directly facing herself. Her viewpoint of the world, both delicate and calm, is connected to the boldness in her strength of expression. If art is considered to be the doubting of preconceptions, rather than a virtual imagined world, these artists face the troublesome nature of physicality, causing viewers to realize what they are forgetting or simply not seeing. These expressions are at times insistent and at times effortless.
