「能動的誤認識は人間本能の一部である。言語、絵画でも、厳密には正確な翻訳と伝達はできない。多くの部分は受け手によって意義が変化していく。このズレは永遠に消えないけれども、ズレがあるからこそ、新しい生命が生まれる可能性を残しているのではないだろうか。小さな隙间にすぎないけれども、それは原点に戻り、物事の深層にある本質を垣間見る機会となるのではないだろうか。」
「Active mis-recognition is part of human instinct. Neither language nor painting is strictly accurate. Most parts change by the receiver. Although this slate does not disappear forever, it may leave the possibility that a new life is born because of deviation. It is only a small gap, but it will be an opportunity to go back to the origin and glimpse the essence in the depths of things.」

千葉に生まれ育ち、東洋的な油絵を追求すべく北京にある中央美術学院へと進学した江上越は、言葉の差異による誤聴の実経験をきっかけに、コミュニケーションを通した認識の問題をテーマに制作を続けています。江上が描き出す「コミュニケーション」とは、お互いの距離を近づけるためではなく、その距離を詳らかに知るためのものだと言えるでしょう。この世界を生きる上で、私たちが誰かと向き合った時に目のあたりにする、決して越えられない隔たり。その間（あわい）を丁寧に見つめ、境界を確かめようとする先に、コミュニケーションのかたちは自ずと浮かび上がってきます。
Etsu Egami was born and raised in Chiba. To pursue Eastern-style oil painting, she became a student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. She has continued to create works whose theme is the problem of us having to understand each other thorough communication. What first prompted her to take up this theme was her experiences with mishearing. The mishearings happened because the two people were speakers of different languages. The communication Egami depicts is not the communication for creating closer relationships. Rather, it is the communication for meticulously understanding the distance that exists between the two people. As we live in this world, when we face someone, we become aware of the gap between the person and us that can never be closed. When we look carefully at the gap and try to determine the boundary between the person and us, we see the real shape of the communication that appears between him or her and us.
