「1990年東京生まれ。ビジュアルアーティストとして自身の身体を中性的な立体物として用い性や人種的な固定概念に問いかけ束縛や流動性を表現。また自由と平等の不確かな世界を制限的な社会的コードを疑い人間の存在意義を探るパフォーマンスを中心に写真、映像、絵画、ミックスメディアなどを用い活動。ロンドン、ヨーロッパ、東京を中心に美術展、舞台、パフォーマンスフェスティバル、ワークショップなどに多数参加。」
「Yuki Kobayashi (born in 1990, Tokyo, Japan) is a visual artist who works in performance, photography, painting, mixed media, and installation. Kobayashi uses his body to explore the neutrality of gender, questioning racial stereotypes, and looking into human relations. His work resonates between restriction and fluidity in time and space. Kobayashi’s action-based performance seeks to reveal the authenticity of the human condition, working with the unexpected and the spontaneous to discover the invisible. In this way, he questions both power and restrictive social codes towards a more uncertain world of freedom and equality. Kobayashi has been participated in world wide festivals, exhibitions, theatre and has collaborated with the photography and film.」

かつてプロテニス選手を目指していたがアーティストの道へと方向転換した小林勇輝は、ロンドンでビジュアル・アートとパフォーマンス・アートを学ぶ。外国に住むアジア人として否応なしに意識せざるを得なかった人種の違いをはじめ、ジェンダーや身体性について問う作品を、絵画、写真、映像、パフォーマンスなどを通して制作している。裸体をさらしたり女性のスポーツウェアを身につける行為によって、着衣の意味やスポーツにおける見世物としての女性性など、社会に染み付いたシステムを批評する態度はきわめて斬新だ。異なる分野や文化を横断し、新たなヴィジョンを提示する小林の自由な表現に可能性を感じている。
Formerly, Yuki Kobayashi wanted to become a professional tennis player. He then instead chose to become an artist. He studied visual art and performance art in London. As an Asian person living outside their home country, he was forced to become aware of racial differences. Thus, using media such as painting, photography, video, and performance, Kobayashi ponders race, gender, and physicality in his works. By showing his naked body and wearing women’s sportswear, he points to the meaning of wearing clothes and how in sports the feminine sex is a spectacle. Such works of his criticize the systems that have become entrenched, and Kobayashi’s critical attitude is highly innovative. Kobayashi’s liberated expressions cross different areas and cultures and offer to us new visions. In them I find abundant possibilities.
