「When I make woodcuts, there are things I do not aim at, things I do not know, things I haven’t experienced without fail. I think the technique of printmaking resembles the people-to-people relations, and it feels like I take the role to fill the space between. I reverse the image that I planned onto a wood and prepare the printing block. I put ink on the woodblock and print it on paper using a Baren. Little by little, it becomes distanced from the original image whenever I go through a necessary process for the print. The print changes through the difference of depth and width of cuts during the act of carving the wood. When printing, the quantity of ink and water, the amount of pressure used with the Baren make it possible to manipulate the strengths and weaknesses in the image. I take photographs of people connected to me, in photos related to daily life. I make woodcuts while remembering our relation, and the memories associated with the person photographed. When I shut a person, who I thought I “knew”, in the two dimensional realm, I discover my "unconsciousness" begins to appear. I want to unveil the parts that I cannot conciliate by myself through the process of printmaking.. 」

Many of Michiko Hamada’s works are portraits of people she knows. These portrayals are all different in terms of facial expression and composition, depicted with objects that symbolize the relationship with the artist, and utilizing a lot of sumi ink. Viewers dissolve and reintegrate Hamada’s portraits, and experience being drawn into the artist’s own memories. Printmaking is not a medium for expressing what is in front of your eyes. It involves drawing, carving and printing, and at the end of the process the image is reversed. Including photography and sketching, artists must return to memory as part of their creation, and the process is converting the image from reality to memory. Hamada’s soft printing wood, shallow carving, limited application of prints and method of using few colors are all elements combining to express images that contain the soft vagueness unique to the invisible thing―memory.
