「2017年の年始にリュミエール兄弟についての映画の中で「蛇のダンス」を観た。そのショットに心奪われ、ダンサーの絵を描きはじめると、己がとりくんでいるメキシコ水中洞窟の映画と絵が関係をもつようになった。雨乞いのため生贄として洞窟の泉に投げ込まれた少女たちに思いを馳せながら彼女たちの顔を描いた。現地では多くの人と出会い、お話を伺い、未知の水中空間に潜った。過剰なインプットの後、日本に帰り撮影素材をまとめつつ、絵を毎日描くというアウトプットをすることで、心身が経験したものを反芻しようしていた気がする。」
「I saw “Snake Dance” in a film about the Lumière Brothers at the beginning of 2017. I was fascinated by the shot and started to draw images of the dancer. Then gradually the images became involved with the film of Mexican underwater caves that I was working on. I drew faces of girls who were thrown into the springs in the caves as sacrifices for the rain, thinking and imagining them while drawing. When we were shooting in Mexico for the film project, we met many people, heard many stories, and dove into unknown underwater spaces. After those excessive inputs, I went back to Japan and made outputs of drawings every day while gathering up the film materials to try and ruminate upon what my body and mind experienced.」

ドキュメンタリー映画監督・小田香は、絵を描く人でもある。単身ボスニアに渡り、サラエボの炭鉱に肉薄した長編映画『鉱 ARAGANE』と、生贄の儀式が語り継がれるメキシコの泉に潜った最新作『セノーテ』はともに、地底に蠢く闇と光を凝視したドキュメンタリーフィルムだが、死と隣り合わせの地下世界での撮影は、彼に大量の絵画やドローイングを吐き出させてきた。ヘッドライトがあぶり出す炭夫たちの深い皺、歴史に溶けていったマヤの少女たちの幻影…...。小田のタッチは素朴だが、おそらくフィルムには定着できなかった、絵画でしか記録できないリアリティーを手探りしていて、ひどく惹きつけられる。このような辺境から、思いがけずやってくる絵画もあるのだ。
Documentary film director Kaori Oda also happens to be a painter. His feature film "Aragane", where he travelled to Bosnia alone to take a close look at Sarajevo's coal mine, and his latest work "Cenote", filmed at a Mexican spring where rituals involving human sacrifices were said to have taken place, are both documentary films focusing on the darkness and light underground, but filming the underground world where death can be just around the corner gave Oda plenty of inspiration to produce numerous paintings and drawings. The deep wrinkles of the miners revealed by the headlights, the visions of young Mayan girls who melted into history... Oda's touch is simple, but is also seeking a reality that probably could not be established on film and can only be recorded through painting, which is terribly fascinating. Paintings can sometimes come unexpectedly from these frontiers.
